Job Description

True Value Company, a global wholesaler serving retail locations in 60 countries, has an immediate need for a Merchandising/Buying Assistant.  You will play a meaningful role in assisting the product merchants/buyers in all aspects of their role.   

The Merchandising/Buying Assistant is responsible for the day to day operations of the Merchandising/Buying Department in support of the Global Product Merchant/Director (GPM) and Product Merchant/Buyer (PM) in the Electrical Department.  Work closely with Merchandising team to gain an understanding of strategic merchandising decisions to facilitate information sharing with the customers.   Partners with GPM and PM to resolve customer and vendor issues.  Schedules meetings, prepares for Reunion (bi-annual trade show) and assists with a variety of business needs for the GPM and PM.

Position Description


  • Receives incoming requests and concerns from customers/retailers and vendors and manages to resolution. Conducts regular follow ups on issues to ensure that they are resolved in a timely and effective manner. Proactively ensures that issues do not occur again.
  • Serves as a liaison between customers and other operational functions (marketing, accounting, inventory management, distribution, etc).
  • Independently prepares routine correspondence, memorandums, agendas, presentations, forms, etc. Responsible for establishing and maintaining official documents and records in appropriate files to ensure organization of materials.
  • Assists PM's and GPMs with communication to vendors regarding line reviews (negotiations), semi-annual reunion preparation and other requests for information from vendor community.
Organization and Reunion Preparation:
  • Utilize project management skills to prepare and organize all Reunion due dates, vendor responses for Reunion dates, and regularly produces status updates to PMs and GPMs. Maintains and follows up on all departmental due dates for semi-annual Reunion convention forms and other Reunion support material. Coordinates Reunion booth set up including equipment, phones, electrical and supplies. Coordinates approval and execution of the entire process down to printing and shipping of all market order forms and materials. Collects, follows up and proofs along with product merchants all vendor offers for Reunion. Collects supplier contracts for market assortment spiffs. Submits and proofs circular advertising proofs - both images and pricing. Collects information to update images and item descriptions for Fine Line.
  • May be required to travel to Reunion as needed, assisting at booths and with vendors.
System Administration:
  • Assists PMs and GPMs with communication to vendors regarding line reviews, semi-annual Reunion preparation and other requests for information from vendor community. Monitors, reviews and make determinations on changes within vendor managed data (VMD) information. Must be knowledgeable about system navigation including new item submissions via the online portal, price change submittals, or any variety of product maintenance submissions. Submit price item corrections via the RMS pricing tool.
  • Performs general administrative duties such as: data entry, filing department documents, typing, note taking, travel arrangements and managing daily mail to ensure order is maintained within the office or department and documents are accurate.

Position Qualifications

Minimum Type and Years of Related Experience Required:

  • Three to five of related experience required
  • Knowledge of Merchandising Systems (RMS).
  • Interprets situations not outlined in procedures; escalates policy issues.
  • Relies upon data, own experiences, other's perspectives, and a clear process when evaluating course of action and making recommendations and decisions.
  • Uses available resources sensibly; is attentive to cost implications of own work in performing role.
  • Knows and applies fundamental concepts, practices, and procedures of a particular field.
  • Possesses expert knowledge of a broad range of widely used PC applications including word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, and databases.
Minimum Education Requirements:
  • Bachelors Degree or equivalent work experience required
