Job Description

The Manager, External Media Relations will be responsible for developing and implementing strategies for external communications that strengthens True Values brand and external exposure, as well as creating strategies for communications to increase prospective customers engagement in company initiatives, strategic plan and retailer and company growth. The Manger External Communications will also provide counsel, messaging and media training to business leaders across the organization. Ideally the candidate will have robust media contacts nationally and regionally focusing on retail.

Position Description

  • Strengthen and leverage True Value’s relationship with top-tier, trade and regional news organizations, as well as key bloggers and other thought leaders; Coordinate media outreach, leveraging key contacts and managing relationships to prioritize and qualify media opportunities in national and regional dailies, wires, business periodicals, broadcast media, online/social media outlets and industry trades.
  • Understand each applicable team’s operating environment and develop strategic communications initiatives to further True Value’s reputation as an industry leader; Work effectively in cross-functional teams to advance external communications strategy; Plan and execute public relations programs for True Value Corporate and Merchandising initiatives.
  • Support executive interviews and other interactions with external media, providing counsel, messaging support and media training, as needed; Write and edit communications materials, including press releases, media alerts, thought leadership, social media content and other communications documents. Partner with senior leadership to create and deliver transparent information and clear messages regarding the direction of the company and key initiatives.
  • Collaborate with marketing to further build out the PR and social media programs; Ensure that campaigns are delivered on-time and within budget and that proper measurements are applied to determine the effectiveness of PR/social and spend; Design and execute the communications strategy for PR and Corporate Social campaigns, including developing editorial calendars, positioning and messaging.
  • Explore and evaluate emerging social media opportunities and tools to build strategies and proposals for implementing effective Corporate Social Media campaigns to drive the communication strategy for the organization; Develop content (agendas, presentations, video, external speakers, etc for associate meetings of all sizes); Assess risks, issues, and potential communications problems and provide proactive solutions.

Position Qualifications

  • Minimum of 7-10+ years of experience in an agency or corporate communications role, primarily focused on external media communications.
  • Experience leading employee commmunication strategy, preferably in a corporate setting
  • Bachelor's degree in Communications, Marketing, Journalism, or a related field, or equivalent experience
  • Prior experience managing internal employees and working with agencies and large corporate partnerships
