The Associate General Counsel provides advice and counsel regarding a broad range of legal matters, and specifically manages all labor-related matters and generally assists the Company in all other employment-related matters. They represent the company at legal proceedings, professional meetings, and/or administrative hearings. They negotiate and advise on the terms of applicable collective bargaining agreements, assist with grievances, and handle any arbitrations resulting therefrom. They provide advice and counsel to Human Resource professionals and other business partners throughout the company on employment laws impacting the Company’s strategic initiatives. They function as subject matter expert on all labor and employment-related matters. They provide legal support to the General Counsel and Assistant General Counsel(s) as needed. This role performs job duties consistent within safety, legal, and regulatory requirements, as well as Company values, standards, culture, and business practices.

Position Description

Responsibilities (May perform other duties and responsibilities, as assigned):

  1. Supports the VP & General Counsel in overseeing the legal aspects of the organization. Implements short/long-term strategies at the direction of the VP & General Counsel that may impact the organization’s legal function. Recognizes when to elevate certain matters to the attention of the VP & General Counsel.
  2. Interprets and prepares legal documents; advocates Company interests in assigned matters; analyzes proposed and existing legislation; reviews, advises and assists with Company policies; monitors and ensures compliance with all applicable laws, regulations and policies; advises management on legal matters to guard the organization against legal liability.
  3. Responsible for providing in-house counsel on labor and employment-related matters, which may include, but are not limited to:
    • Collective Bargaining Agreements (CBA) and negotiations
    • Discrimination against employees based on age, ancestry, color, creed, disability, marital status, medical conditions, national origin, race, religion, sex, or sexual orientation
    • Employee benefits like leaves of absence and retirement plans
    • Grievances and arbitrations
    • Human Resources related issues
    • Labor relations
    • Policy and employment agreements
    • Privacy rights
    • Harassment and sexual harassment
    • Termination of employment
    • Wage, hour laws and overtime standards (FLMA)
    • Workers’ compensation
    • Workplace safety
    • Unemployment and other state agency claims
  4. Identifies and assesses legal risks and opportunities within the labor and employment area and advises accordingly.
  5. Educates clients and stakeholders on legal matters, policies and procedures.
  6. Independently handles legal matters and projects ranging from basic to complex.
  7. May coordinate, supervise, and/or manage legal efforts with the Company’s outside counsel, including on litigation and employment-related matters.
  8. May lead cross-functional teams or projects.
  9. Establishes and maintains relationships, credibility and trust with clients, stakeholders, legal team members and other colleagues.

Position Qualifications

Education & Experience:

  • Juris Doctorate degree required
  • 7-10 years of experience, with substantive labor & employment and litigation experience in a corporate legal department and/or a nationally recognized law firm.
  • Intermediate knowledge of MS Office (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint).
  • Oral and written communication skills. Research skills. Judgment. Leadership skills.

Licenses & Certifications

  • Admission to Illinois Bar
  • Valid attorney’s license

  • Travel may vary in length and duration.
