True Value Manufacturing, a leading manufacturer of architectural paints, aerosols, solvents & paint applicators has an immediate opening for a Purchasing Agent in our Cary, IL manufacturing facility.

Scheduled Days:     Monday through Friday

Scheduled Hours:    7am to 3:30pm

The Purchasing Agent is responsible for the organization, planning, procurement and all related activities for all material requirements in assigned paint, specialty, and paint sundry product manufacturing and corresponding purchased finished goods as performed by the following duties:

Position Description

RAW MATERIAL MANAGEMENT:                                                                                                               

Review and analyze raw material requirements, production forecasts and changes in raw material purchases, packaging requirements, and outside purchased finished goods. Place orders accordingly while maintaining inventory levels as low as possible with regard to meeting inventory goals.

Assist factory managers and their staff, where needed, with the completion of weekly production schedules. To include: raw materials and packaging requirements, lead times, expediting receiving problems, inventory discrepancies, specials, schedule changes, problem/bad batches, quality control issues, defective materials and the coordination of returns and/or exchanges.

Maintain lists of current obsolete raw materials, packaging, and sales aids and initiate phase out, return, or disposal.

Administration of monthy cycle counts.

NEW PRODUCT/PACKAGING INTRODUCTION:                                                                               

Coordinates new packaging introduction and all revisions with regard to art, input to system, order placement, monitor delivery dates, and advising the Marketing, Production and P&IC dept for filling scheduling, and disposition of old stock for respective area.

Coordinates the phase out and disposition of old stock.


Maintains cost updates in system for raw materials and purchased finished goods. 

Assists with yearly cost season including verification of last purchase price as well as current cost and update of current freight charges.

Reviews invoice discrepancies, determines cause for discrepancy, calls vendor, and approves for payment.

Assists in pricing of outside business opportunities with regard to obtaining price quotations and product availability.


Negotiates with vendors to obtain the best possible price, order quantities and terms to assist department in cost reduction program, as well as resolving any quality problems/concerns.

Evaluates and reports on the performance of vendors for price, delivery, product acceptability and vendor service.

Supports Purchasing Manager in coordination with Labs, new and alternate raw materials, formula changes, specification changes, vendor selection, market conditions, and vendor performance issues, and pricing situations.

PERFORMS OTHER DUTIES AS NEEDED:                                                                     
Processes Processes New and Obsolete product notices with department information, as needed.

Assists in the annual physical inventory by auditing original counts of raw materials and packaging, if needed.

Cross-trained to assist, when needed, in completion of daily department administrative responsibilities of other associates.

Cross-trained to perform departmental raw material and finished goods purchasing functions of other associates.

Position Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Associate's degree or equivalent work experience
  • Demonstrated ability to handle multiple tasks and priorities
  • 3 or more years of experience working in a purchasing or manufacturing environment

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Computer skills with Microsoft Office. Must be a competent user of Excel.
    • Good oral and written communication skills.
    • Proficient negotiation and vendor management skills
    • Analysis skills to identify problem areas and formulate recommendations to solve problems.
    • Ability to manage multiple time sensitive situations.
    • Ability to work with multidepartment teams and all levels of management in resolving issues.
